Women have shown interest in the tourism industry and they are going against all the odds to venture into tourism. Poverty has contributed to this since women are termed as housewives and mothers in the Africa society. Their work is to look after the family, bare kids, looking after the animals, cooking, looking for fuel, working on the farms etc. modern women have woken up and they are no longer domesticated as before. They now can make decisions like men and wise decisions.
Women are tapping into tourism, slowly in small ways though, activities they conduct are e.g making ornaments which they sell in curio shops to the tourists, baskets, kangas (African clothes), sandals, formed dancing groups to entertain tourists, farming and supplying food stuffs to hotels and lodges, established lodges which are tourist attractions like the UWASO in Samburu, formed eateries where they sell foods to locals and also foreigners.
Some women have followed the men’s path, like breaking the stones (in the eastern parts of kenya where there is extreme poverty) to put food their table and also educate their children. They face challenges like lack of market, illiteracy, lack of support from the community, poverty and so much more.
Being a woman in travel and tourism in Africa is challenging. Until recently, women were not even allowed to own land in Kenya. Moreover, most of the positions available to women are low paying service positions. Grace’s hope is that women can be recognized for their emotional and physical strength as well as their ability to take care of others, by taking care of each other.Masimba Hills safaris has come up with tailored Women Tours & Safaris that support women to benefit from the male dominated trade in Kenya.
The women tours ideally is for women tourists to support female owned tour operator who ensure that the dollar trickles down to the women in the village. We have great dreams and hope for women wanting to join the industry and it can only be achieved by getting support from Female traveller! Our tours encourage those taking safaris by Masimba Safaris to support women by specifically buying curios and other handicrafts made and or sold by women, Support community groups supplying food stuffs to lodges and hotels, encourage female travelers to select lodges run and owned by women, supporting female tour guides by insisting on female safari guides.
My idea is not to support the female support staff who work for male owned establishments but to develop female entrepreneurs to rise up and own tourism. ”. I believe we are more gifted than men in this industry…
We have a greater sense of humanity and therefore we are able to see tourism as a way of sharing humanity with our clients and guests.”
