Kenya Hotels are classified and awarded a number of stars from budget (the lowest) to 5 by the Licensing Department of the Ministry of Tourism. The criteria for classification are complex but include the size and fittings in bedrooms, the extent of services, the quality of food, the available recreational facilities and the hotel's location. Clearly, there is some difficulty in applying these criteria to game lodges and even more so to tented camps so the gradings there are less of a guide than in the case of a city hotel.

A tented lodge has permanent public areas but sleeping accommodation is in tents. Usually, game lodges and tented camps also have swimming pools.
